Okay, so another "expert" weighs in on AI. Big deal. Stanley Bill, founder of Notes from Poland, is apparently also a Senior Lecturer in Polish Studies at Cambridge. Good for him. Does knowing about Polish culture suddenly make you an AI guru? I didn't get that memo.
Poland's Voice in the Algorithm
Bill founded Notes From Poland back in 2014, a blog dedicated to "personal impressions, cultural analysis and political commentary." Fine. Now he's the Chair of the Board of the Notes from Poland Foundation. Sounds important...but what's his actual AI expertise? Is he just jumping on the bandwagon like everyone else?
He's committed to "the promotion of deeper knowledge and understanding of Poland." Great. But what about deeper knowledge and understanding of AI? See, this is what gets me. Everyone and their mother is suddenly an AI expert. You read a few articles, maybe watch a TED Talk, and BAM! You're ready to lecture the world.
The "Deeper Knowledge" Mirage
I'm not saying Bill doesn't have valuable insights. Maybe he does. But the lack of specifics is deafening. He's spent "more than ten years living in Poland." I've spent more than ten years perfecting my pizza-making skills. Doesn't mean I'm qualified to run a Michelin-star restaurant.
The OECD countries are probably thrilled, offcourse, to have another voice chiming in. More data points, more opinions, more noise. But is anyone actually listening? And more importantly, is anyone actually doing anything? All this talk about OECD guidelines and OECD AI principles...it all sounds great on paper. But let's be real: who's enforcing any of this? The World Bank? The IMF? They're too busy dealing with bigger problems.
It's like everyone's running around with fire extinguishers pointed in the general direction of the blaze, but nobody's actually pulling the pin. We're drowning in OECD data and OECD statistics, but are we any closer to understanding the real implications of AI? I doubt it.
Maybe I'm being too cynical. Maybe Bill's work is groundbreaking. Maybe Notes from Poland is about to become the leading voice in the AI ethics debate. Then again, maybe I'm the crazy one here.
Is This Just More Hot Air?
Look, I'm not trying to be a jerk. But forgive me if I don't exactly hang on every word from another academic wading into the AI discourse. There's so much virtue signaling, so much hand-wringing, and so little actual, you know, action. It all makes me want to scream into a pillow. Or maybe just order a pizza.
